Thoughts on the Third Aliyah of Vayakel
The name of the assistant builder of the Mishkan (tabernacle) is Oholiav ben Achisomoch.
During of first session of Parsha and Pizza tonight we discussed the significance of the name Oholiav, which means “the heart of my tent.” Let us now look at Achisomoch, which means “my brothers support.”
The name reminds us that though the Mishkan helps us draw closer to G-d, we dare not draw closer to G-d at the expense of our brother. To the contrary, drawing closer to God should bring us closer to our fellow, for G-d’s teachings are designed to achieve just that. Half of the 10 Commandments deal exclusively with interpersonal relationships.
As we struggle through this period together of social isolation let us remember that our success depends on supporting our brothers and sisters.
Kol Tuv,
Rabbi Steven Saks
