AKSE SD2020 half

Special Notice: March 21, 2020 — 25 Adar 5780

In light of national guidelines to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19,
and for the safety of our congregants, AKSE services are cancelled until further notice.

Shalom AKSE Congregants and Friends of AKSE:

Like all of us, AKSE continues to adjust to the current situation.
During this time we are publishing the monthly Shofar online, as well as mailing it to our members. And although we are not preparing a printed Shabbat newsletter, we continue to send out weekly Shabbat e-mail blasts. These include links to the Rabbi’s Shabbat sermon, a schedule of virtual events, the Yahrzeit listing for the week, and other updates and useful information. Subscribe to our e-mail distribution list to receive them. The latest weekly email may be viewed here.
We are utilizing Zoom for our virtual events, which regularly include Parsha & Pizza on Wednesdays at 6 PM, History class on Thursdays at 6 PM, Kabbalat Shabbat and a D’var Torah on Fridays at 6:30 PM, and Ma’ariv and Havdallah on Saturday night a few minutes after the posted Havdallah time for Washington, DC. See the weekly Shabbat email for details, including how to connect.
AKSE also has a public Facebook group page. This page is a means of two-way communication with our congregants and friends. If you use Facebook, but have not joined our group page, please go to it here and click on the “Join” button.
We want you to be able to contact us as well. AKSE office staff are working from home. They are monitoring their e-mail (their addresses are office@AKSE.org and bookkeeper@AKSE.org), as well as checking any voicemail left at 302-762-2705.
Rabbi Saks wishes to maintain contact with all congregants. Feel free to reach him by phone or e-mail (rabbi@akse.org).
And please feel free to contact either of us as well (prez@akse.org). Let us know how we can help.
We are all in this together. By remaining a caring community, we will make the best of this difficult time and come out of it stronger than ever.

From strength to strength!

Alan Bleier, AKSE President
Max Rosenberg, AKSE Executive Vice-President

Activity on Hold: We are now scheduling “Mobile Minyanim” at places where some of our less mobile members live on a monthly basis. See an article about it here. There will be a “Mobile Minyan” followed by “Parsha and Pizza” at Lodge Lane at 6 p.m. on March 18 and May 6.

AKSE Time Capsule Extracted

On June 3, 1962, before the completion of our new synagogue building, a time capsule was placed in the cornerstone between the large concrete tablets of the Ten Commandments facing Washington Blvd. On June 12, 2018, 56 years later, the time capsule was extracted. On the next day, June 13, the contents of the time capsule were revealed before our annual congregational meeting.

Thanks to Paula Gordon for coordinating this project and for assembling a slideshow detailing the extraction of the time capsule and the revelation of its contents. You can view the slideshow here.
